12V vs 15V Landscape Transformer Taps

Higher taps can offset voltage drop on a low-voltage run. They are not a universal 15 V setting, and EMCOD families do not all print the same tap set.

Why landscape transformers have multiple taps

  • Many low-voltage landscape fixtures are designed around a nominal 12 V operating window.
  • Cable resistance drops voltage as current travels. The voltage that matters is at the fixture, not only at the transformer terminal.
  • A higher tap raises starting voltage so a long or loaded run can still arrive inside the fixture window.
  • The correct tap depends on actual load, conductor, length, and fixture limits. It is not “long run = highest tap.”
  • Measure voltage at the load after install. Do not assume the tap label equals fixture voltage.

Nominal 12 V landscape systems

Many landscape fixtures are specified around a 12 V operating window. A 15 V transformer terminal is not “brighter 12 V.” It is extra starting voltage that can be consumed by cable drop. If the fixture then receives more than its manufacturer allows, it can run hot or fail. Check voltage at the load.

Check voltage at the load

Choose a tap so the fixture voltage stays inside that fixture’s published window after drop. Nearby fixtures on a short run can see nearly the tap voltage. Far fixtures see less. The correct tap is a field and design result, not a catalog slogan.

Common questions

Does every EMCOD landscape transformer have 12 V and 15 V taps?

No. Confirm the exact MPN specification or installation sheet. Sourced ESL and Simple sheets print 12/15 VAC. EMT and SMT documents in the approved set print different tap structures. Catalog records may only say Multi-tap.

Should I use the 15 V tap on a long run?

Only if the voltage at the fixture stays inside that fixture’s window after drop. A higher tap can overvoltage nearby fixtures. Check the run, load, cable, and field voltage. Use the voltage-drop guide for the calculation.

Can I read EMT300SS-E taps from the model number?

No. EMT wattage class and stainless family are encoded; exact tap voltages are on the specification sheet. Do not assume EMT300SS-E uses the EMT-22E 12–22 VAC set.
